Our Common Good

This is terribly sad.  The guy had a history of mental illness. He worked with a defense contractor so probably listed to BS at work all day, had Rush on the radio in the car as he drove to work and then went home and watched Fox News - all telling him to be horribly afraid.  Then innocent people pay.

The incident happened Wednesday night when some unidentified men entered the shop and put a gun to Jatinder Singh head.

Speechless.

A gunman opened fire from a rooftop in a Finnish town centre in the early hours of Saturday, killing two people and wounding several others, police said.

An 18-year-old man wearing camouflage clothing was arrested after the shooting in Hyvinkaa, a small town 56 km (34 miles) north of the capital Helsinki.

The motive for the shooting was unclear, but police said it seemed the suspect is not extremist and does not support a specific ideology.

A federal judge has handed down lengthy sentences for several former New Orleans police officers for their roles in the shooting deaths of two people and the wounding of four others in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina in September, 2005.

Four of the men will serve more than 30 years in prison; a fifth got six years behind bars for covering up knowledge of the shootings. After Katrina passed through the city, unarmed civilians were crossing the Danziger Bridge when New Orleans police officers responded to a call of shots fired at an officer. The officers opened fire, killing a mentally ill man and a teenaged boy.

As AP reports, “to make the shootings appear justified, officers conspired to plant a gun, fabricate witnesses and falsify reports. The case became the centerpiece of the Justice Department’s push to clean up the troubled New Orleans Police Department.”

Muslim Woman Beaten to Death in Hate Crime

She died today, March 24th 2012

Inna lillahi Inna Illaihi Rajioon

WOOOOOOOW, this is so disgusting and tragic. Tell me again that bigotry against Muslims is justified and I might just have to slap you.

People need to understand why jokes against marginalized groups aren’t funny. This is why jokes about bombs and hijabs are deplorable, because they incite situations like this. They encourage stereotypes and enable Islamophobia.

This, like Trayvon Martin’s murder, diminishes all of us.

Three Men Plead Guilty to Federal Hates Crimes in Senseless Mississippi Killing
Editor’s note: This story contains language that some readers may consider offensive.
(CNN) — Three white Mississippi men pleaded guilty to federal hate crimes Thursday in connection with the 2011 beating death of an African-American man in Jackson, the Justice Department announced.Deryl Dedmon, John Aaron Rice and Dylan Butler each admitted to conspiracy and violating the 2009 federal hate-crimes law in last June’s killing of James Craig Anderson. They face sentences of up to life in prison and $250,000 in fines, federal prosecutors said.
The 19-year-old Dedmon had already pleaded guilty to state murder and hate-crime charges Wednesday in a state court and was sentenced to life in prison. Rice, 19, and Butler, 20, made their initial appearances with Dedmon in federal court Thursday morning.
The men are among the first defendants to be prosecuted under the federal hate-crime statute that President Barack Obama signed in 2009 and the first to be prosecuted in a fatal attack, Assistant Attorney General Thomas Perez, the head of the Justice Department’s civil rights division, said in a statement on Thursday’s pleas.
“The Department of Justice will vigorously pursue those who commit racially motivated assaults and will use every tool at our disposal to ensure that those who commit such acts are brought to justice,” Perez said. “And I note that our investigation in this matter is ongoing.”
In court Thursday, all three admitted to harassing and assaulting African-Americans on several occasions in the weeks before Anderson’s death, hurling beer bottles, firing slingshots and driving at them with cars, prosecutors said. They targeted people they believed to be drunk or homeless, believing them less likely to report the attacks.
They are also expected to testify against other teens implicated in Anderson’s killing, two sources close to the proceedings told CNN.
They admitted to violating the Matthew Shepard and James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Prevention Act of 2009, named for the victims of two 1998 killings that shocked the country. Matthew Shepard, a gay Wyoming teenager, died after being kidnapped, beaten and left tied to a fence, while Byrd was a black man dragged to death in Texas by white supremacists.
Anderson’s death prompted several large marches and prayer vigils in Jackson, a city of about 537,000 people. At his state plea hearing, Dedmon told the court that his crimes were the result of being “young and dumb, ignorant and full of hatred.”
But Hinds County Circuit Judge Jeff Weill told him, “Whatever excuse you offer, forget that. There is no excuse.”
Anderson, 47, died after he was beaten and run over by a truck driven by Dedmon, who was part of a group of seven white youths from largely white Rankin County who decided to “go f**k with some niggers” after a night of partying and drinking, law enforcement officials have said, quoting some of the suspects in the case.
Authorities have said they believe Dedmon led and instigated the attack. They said the youths climbed into Dedmon’s green truck and a white SUV and drove to the western edge of Jackson, where Anderson was standing in a hotel parking lot just beyond a highway exit ramp.
On a videotape obtained exclusively by CNN, the group pulls into the parking lot and stops where Anderson is standing, although he is just off camera and not visible. The young men can then be seen going back and forth between their cars and Anderson.
Witnesses told authorities this is when Anderson’s beating took place, as the white youths yelled racial epithets, including “white power.” After the beating, Dedmon drove his Ford F-250 truck over him, leaving him to die, according to what some of the teens cooperating with police have told authorities.
Rice initially faced state murder charges as well, but a judge reduced the charges to simple assault because he was not believed to be driving the vehicle used to kill Anderson.
At Dedmon’s sentencing Wednesday, Anderson’s sister, Barbara Anderson Young, said her family was praying for “racial conciliation.”
“These last months have been very difficult,” Young said. “We cried. We wept. We reminisced about our beloved brother, Craig, a loss I cannot even explain. Craig was a big-hearted person who loved his fellow man.”

There is this guy….

who lives in a community near me.  He has been hauled in by the police a number of times for violence against various partners.  Each time, the women - for all the reasons women in such situations do - lots of poverty, too few places to live, fear of recrimination by his relatives, believing the sad requests for forgiveness, needing to be loved by someone… - these women didn’t follow through with charges.  They didn’t want to testify.

They didn’t want to have to take the stand and repeat what he had done to them.  Humiliate themselves in front of stranger. One had fought back and so felt she was also guilty.  Despite the fact that she was the one with the black eye and a splint on her arm.  So he went from one abusive relationship to another.

Until today.  Today, he slit the throat of his latest.  Her body will do the testifying this time.

Social media users who denounce drug cartel activities along the Mexican border received a brutal warning this week: Two mangled bodies hanging like cuts of meat from a pedestrian bridge. A woman was hogtied and disemboweled, her intestines protruding from three deep cuts on her abdomen. Attackers left her topless, dangling by her feet and hands from a bridge in the border city of Nuevo Laredo. A bloodied man next to her was hanging by his hands, his right shoulder severed so deeply the bone was visible. Signs left near the bodies declared the pair, both apparently in their early 20s, were killed for posting denouncements of drug cartel activities on a social network.

Sickening.  As economies sink, I just don’t see how this ever gets any better unless we call an end to the war on drugs.  Legalize the shit and use the money saved and raised to offer treatment and disease containment.

41 year old James McVay sits in a Dane County, Wisconsin jail for murdering Maybelle Schein, a 75 year old woman from Sioux Falls, South Dakota whom he viewed as “collateral damage” on his way to assassinate President Obama over his “debt ceiling policies”. McVay says he was sitting in jail listening to political talk radio when his plot to kill the president was hatched.

He showed no remorse over his killing of Schein, saying, “People die every day on the way to accomplish a mission.” He claims she was just the first person to be killed on his way to kill the President, with whose “policies” he does not agree. McVay does not believe that voting Obama out of office is a solution to this problem, and claims that his murdering the President would be doing the world a favor. He views his plot to assassinate the United States President as a “war”.

Look, there’s a limit to exactly how illegal you can make abortion, and conservative legislators are always trying to one-up each other by proposing new ways to make it illegal-er. It takes a stroke of luck to come across a great idea like giving women the death penalty for having an abortion for any reason. But it takes a true genius to decide that women who merely have miscarriages can also be arrested, charged, and put to death. The great mind we’re talking about, Georgia state Rep. Bobby Franklin, has introduced this in a 10-page bill, a work of staggering conservative brilliance it may be made into stone tablets and brought up Mount Sinai so God Himself can read it and weep at the beautiful work of His second-greatest human being ever.

Nebraska lawmakers, it seems, only need one bill to accomplish what would take two in Iowa: The legalized killing of abortion providers.
